As stated in previous supplements, the sewers of The Ever-Changing City rival The Catacombs of Paris in terms of how easy it is to get lost and, with uttermost certainty, never be found again. And because of the sheer size of the sewer system, and the very nature of Sargasso itself, it's extremely likely that there's something down there that could be part of the reason why those who become lost are never found.

As described in the Big Boxes Supplement, very few beings are able to traverse the depths effectively, one of them being an actual goddess and her followers with their base of operations is hidden deep inside the sewers. Though stories told by criminals and thrill seekers, the ones that managed to get out the sewers, stated that there is a... something... sleezing around the sewers. While very few of the survivors are willing to speak of what they saw, the goddess, Cloacina, has been said to have actually confronted whatever what this thing is, as it was stalking her followers.

From what the goddess was able to find out, the thing in the sewers was intelligent, calling himself "Scratches Malone." Cloacina, along with survivors willing to speak about it, all describe the same thing: When he first appears, Scratches looked completely human, a sharp-dressed man in his early 30s wearing a clean, grey dress suit and fedora; clean shaven with a few strands of hair sticking out of his hat; and puffing away on a cuban cigar.

When he first met Cloacina, Scratches acted like a proper gentleman, and asked if the goddess would like help in leaving the sewers with the goddess hearing a series of scratching sounds coming from behind Scratches. Cloacina was able to tell right away that Scratches wasn't what he appeared to be, using her unique sense of awareness in the sewers to see that the "human" before her was attached from the back by a tentacle from a much larger creature.

A gigantic, vile abomination that looked like a horrible mix of a serpent and a centipede with the "head" being a vertical set of jaws with human-like teeth and one completely red eye on each side. The "human" was actually more of a flesh puppet attached to a very long tentacle coming from the creature's mouth.

Knowing that the creature had been found out, the puppet was immediately retracted back into the creature's maw, the beast then charged after Cloacina to feast on her, only for the goddess to swiftly swipe her arm downward, causing the sewer's ceiling to move down and pinned the beast under it. While it squirmed to get free, the creature's maw opened back up to reveal it's puppet again, only this time the puppet dropped the gentleman facade and showed that the creature actually had a very crude and morbid demeanor, calling Cloacina all sorts of sexist insults and threatened to eat her slowly and painfully, piece by piece. These threats were cut short as Cloacina made the ceiling move further downward to crush Scratches even more.

Cloacina told the creature that she is willing to make a deal, if Scratches stops stalking & feeding on her followers, and help her protect her temple, she will allow the beast to live. Partially since she also doesn't want moldering corpses clogging up the sewers. While Scratches didn't want to be ordered around, it knew that the goddess is more then capable of smashing it flat if it doesn't comply but it will still be able to eat the criminals that try to scour the sewers for the goddess' temple. So apprehensively, Scratches agreed to the conditions.

Scratches Malone sounds like quite a horrifying creature. Sure won’t be going in the sewers anytime soon.
